Kunke, also known as a Cowrie Basket or Kodi Basket, is a traditional Bengali measuring vessel typically woven from cane (Pani Bet) or cast in metal. In Hindu rituals, a Kunke filled with newly harvested paddy is worshipped as the embodiment of Goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing abundant prosperity, especially during the Nabanya harvest festival.
The Kunke is also essential in Bengali weddings. During the Sindoor Daan ceremony, the groom uses it to apply vermilion to the bride's forehead, sealing their marital bond. Additionally, small baskets holding sacred Cowrie (Kodi) shells are traditionally placed during Lakshmi Puja to attract wealth and good fortune
