Pancha Rang refers to the five sacred coloured powders used to transform a physical environment into a consecrated ritual zone. According to the uncompromising rules of the Purohit Darpan, these powders are an essential component of Sthan-shuddhi (purification of the place). The text mandates that before any major worship begins, the ritual area must be cleaned, smeared with cow dung, and decorated with these five colours to make the space look as clear and reflective as a mirror (darpanodar). This aesthetic and spiritual adornment is required to formally invite divine energies into the space.
Pancha Rang is strictly required to draw intricate geometric diagrams on the ground, such as the Sarvatobhadra Mandala. These mandalas serve as the spiritual "circuitry" or anchor for the deity during high-level Vedic ceremonies. The powders are used to draw a sacred square or pattern beneath the Kalash (Holy Pot) to stabilize and sanctify its foundation during housewarmings or major festivals. The Dash Karma Paddhati explicitly lists Pancha Rang as a mandatory item for ceremonies such as the Samavartana (graduation from Vedic studies), where the ritual space must be flawlessly consecrated.
