Chhat Puja Kit

  • Chhat Puja is performed to remove obstacles and negative energies and to seek the divine blessings of Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya for health, prosperity, and happiness. It brings peace and harmony to the family and blesses devotees with success, abundance, and overall well-being in life.

  • Chhath Puja is an ancient, profoundly unifying Vedic festival dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (the Goddess of Nature and Vitality). Unlike other festivals, it features no idol worship and requires no artificial temples. Instead, the community gathers at the banks of a river or water body to offer gratitude to the sun for sustaining life on Earth. When celebrated at a Community Ghat, it is the ultimate equalizer—dissolving all social barriers as every family, regardless of background, stands in the same water to offer the exact same fruits of the earth to the divine.
  • This rigorous and joyous community festival spans four days and peaks strictly on:
  • • The sixth day (Shashti) of the lunar month of Kartik (typically six days after Diwali).
  • • The community gathers for the Sandhya Arghya (evening offerings to the setting sun) and returns the next morning for the Usha Arghya (dawn offerings to the rising sun).
  • [Important Note for Committees: The classical Vedic NityaKarma emphatically declares that from children to the elderly, men and women, everyone has the universal right to worship God. You do not need to belong to a specific background or class to pray! However, organizing a massive community Ghat involves coordinating hundreds of fasting devotees (Vratis) and managing sacred fire offerings safely in an open environment. For this reason, a community guide is often helpful to orchestrate the timings and traditional chants.]
  • Step 1 (Inclusive Ghat Purification): The community volunteers cleanse the riverbanks and Ghat grounds, often using traditional Cow Dung Cakes, ensuring the environment is physically and spiritually pristine for all attendees.
  • Step 2 (The Divine Invocation): As the fasting devotees (Vratis) step into the holy water, collective prayers are offered to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya.
  • Step 3 (Traditional Worship & Adornment): The Vratis don the Cotton Gamcha, prominently apply the highly auspicious Sindur from the nose to the hairline (a hallmark of authentic North Indian Chhath devotion), and adorn themselves with Red Chandan and Alta.
  • Step 4 (The Grand Arghya & Aarti): The festival peaks as devotees offer milk, water, and Honey to the sun from the beautifully arranged Bamboo Soop. The gathering concludes with a massive, space-clearing Aarti using the Cow Ghee, Agarbatti, and Pure Camphor to shower warmth and blessings on every person standing in the water!
  • • Fosters Absolute Equality and Unity: Reminds us that under the light of the sun, all community members are equal, replacing social division with mutual harmony, shared devotion, and profound environmental respect.
  • • Grants Vitality and Healing: Worshipping the sun—the ultimate source of all energy—invokes immense physical vitality and ensures the longevity and health of children and family members.
  • • Deep Winter Respiratory Protection: Because devotees stand in cold river water during the winter dawn, the heavy use of Pure Camphor (Kapur) during the Ghat Aarti is highly beneficial; Ayurvedic practice officially notes that camphor is exceptionally effective at relieving chest congestion, thereby protecting the respiratory health of the gathered community.
  • The MySanatan Chhath Puja Kit is a breathtakingly authentic, spiritually uplifting package designed explicitly for Community Ghat organizers honoring North Indian traditions. We believe that sacred traditions belong to everyone, which is why historical texts explicitly bridge the gap between orthodox tradition and everyday accessibility so that ordinary people can perform their sacraments. We have meticulously sourced the exact regional items required for an authentic Chhath—including the iconic Bamboo Soop and vibrant Sindur. By using this transparent, fully-equipped kit, your community can actively participate in every step of the ancient sun-worship without feeling alienated or excluded!

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Q1: The kit includes 5 pieces of the Bamboo Soop. Are these all used at once or distributed among different people?
  • During Chhath Puja, multiple offerings (Arghya) are made. The 5 Bamboo Soops (winnowing baskets) allow a single family or a small group of Vratis (fasting devotees) to arrange separate, beautiful offerings of fruits, Thekua, and sugarcane simultaneously. This ensures that offerings for both the setting sun (Sandhya Arghya) and the rising sun (Usha Arghya) can be prepared in dedicated, pure vessels without overlapping items.
  • Q2: Why is the vermilion (Khukumoni Sindur) in this kit applied from the tip of the nose up to the hairline?
  • This long, prominent orange/red trail is a unique and sacred cultural hallmark of North Indian Chhath devotion. It represents the longevity, health, and prosperity of the family. The Vratis apply it publically after stepping out of the holy water to symbolize their deep, unyielding devotion and connection to Chhathi Maiya.
  • Q3: How do we use the "Cotton Gamcha Medium" included in the kit during the water rituals?
  • The Cotton Gamcha is a highly versatile, pure cotton cloth. Before entering the river or pond, the Vrati uses it to wrap around themselves or keep as a sacred cloth over their shoulders. It is also traditionally used to carefully wipe the hands and face after standing waist-deep in the cold water, or to shield the wet offerings from dust on the windy riverbanks.
  • Q4: What is the correct ritual sequence for utilizing Aguru and Attar during the Step 4 Arghya offerings?
  • To elevate the aromatic purity of the open-air riverbank:
  • Before the fruits are placed into the Bamboo Soop, the guide should sprinkle a few drops of Aguru (a dense, earthy, sacred wood essence) inside the basket to purify its energy.
  • Just before the offering is raised toward the Sun God, dab a tiny amount of the premium, sweet Attar onto the edges of the Soop and the Vrati's wrists. This acts as a fragrant invitation to the divine in an open, windy environment.
  • Q5: How should the Honey (Madhu) be poured from the shoreline during the high-volume public Arghya?
  • During Step 4, as the Vrati stands waist-deep in the water holding the Bamboo Soop, a family member or the community guide stands beside them on the shore. While pouring milk or holy water over the fruits toward the sun, thin streams of Honey should be trickled continuously into the offering stream. This represents sweetening the cosmic life force and feeding the elements of nature.
  • Q6: Why are both "Long" and "Round" cotton wicks essential for managing a crowded twilight and dawn Aarti?
  • The two styles of wicks allow organizers to balance continuous illumination with intense space-clearing fire rituals:
  • Round Cotton Wicks (Phool Batti): These are placed inside individual small clay lamps (Diyas) nestled inside the Bamboo Soop to stay lit while floating on the water or being held by the Vrati.
  • Long Cotton Wicks: These are layered in larger multi-tiered camphor lamps used by the shoreline guides during the final Grand Aarti. They hold a larger quantity of Cow Ghee to withstand strong river breezes during the cold twilight and dawn hours.
