Temple History

The Nandikeshwari Sahktipeeth is situated on the banks of the Mayurakshi River. It is one of the most popular Shaktipeethas in the Birbhum circuit and is nearly 30-35 km from Bolpur-Santiniketan. If local lores are to be believed, Shiva devotee Nandi first offered puja to Mata Sati at this site, from where the name Nandikeshwari was derived. The temple complex houses multiple shrines dedicated to other deities such as Ram-Sita, Hanumanji, Radha-Govinda, Mahasaraswati, Vishnu-Lakshmi, and Mahalakshmi-Ganesha. It is a unique symbol of Bengal’s religious tradition where multiple beliefs coexist harmoniously. Lord Shiva protects this peetha as Nandikeshwar Bhairava. Although the site is ancient, the present temple structure is relatively modern, built around 1913. Durga Puja is the most prominent festival celebrated at this peetha.
