Temple History

Situated in Nalhati township of Birbhum district, the Nalateshwari Temple is approximately 19 km from Rampurhat Junction and about 26 km from Tarapith. The main structure is a traditional Chaar Chala temple decorated with panels of terracotta art. Just like any other Shaktipeethas, this site is also ancient; however, the current structure was built during the late 19th Century. The most intriguing ritual here is the pouring of water in the Nala or throat of the goddess. It is widely claimed that no matter how much water is poured, it never overflows. The 18th-century legendary Bengali zamindar Rani Bhabani of Natore was one of the patrons of this sacred site. She built the Lord Ganesha shrine within the temple complex. It is also said that the first Anna Bhog to the Goddess was offered by her royal family on Shukla Chaturdashi of Ashad (June-July); this auspicious event is still celebrated in the Nalateshwari temple each year.
