Temple History

Located on the banks of the Kopai River, Kankalitala Temple is approximately 10 km from Bolpur, Shantiniketan. If legends are to be believed, the Kanchidesh or pelvic bone of Goddess Sati fell on this place. The body part hit the earth with such an immense force that it created a natural dent, which eventually turned into a Kund or Pond. It is said that the remains of Goddess Sati are still hidden underneath the holy water of the Pavitra Kunda. The site has been a place of worship for thousands of years; however, the original structure of the shrine is believed to have been demolished by Kalapahar, the infamous invader in the 16th century. The current temple structure is comparatively modern. No stone or metal idol is worshipped in the Kankali Tala Kali temple, as the Goddess resides here in her truest form, energy. Chaitra Sankranti (mid-April), the last day of the Bengali Year, is celebrated hugely in the Kankalitala peetha.
