Temple History

The RadhaBinod temple is situated in the Joydeb Kenduli village, on the banks of the River Ajay, about 28-30km from Bolpur Shantiniketan. As per popular lore, Shri Krishna himself came to write verses on behalf of Poet Joydeb. It is said that he redefined the portrayal of divine love in Indian literature and influenced the Bhakti movement immensely. The temple was built (in 1683 CE) by the Queen of Burdwan, Braja Kishori, in the fond memory of Poet Joydeb and his beloved wife, Padmavati, in his karmabhumi, Kenduli. Countless people gather here to experience the Joydeb Kenduli Mela, held annually around the holy time of Poush Sankranti. At this time, Kenduli becomes a cultural hub for Bauls, Poets, and Mystics.
