Temple History

Located in the Bakreshwar village of Birbhum district, the Bakreshwar Dham is about 18-24 km from Suri, the District HQ. According to legends, Bakreshwar is a Mahapeeth where great Sadhakas attained siddhis. This sacred land belongs to Bakreshwar Lokenath Shiva, Goddess Mahismardini, and the great Shiva devotee – Sage Ashtavakra. This site is also renowned for its ten natural hot springs or Pavitra Kundas, each of which has a unique blend of minerals and temperature. Even though the site is ancient, a significant portion of the current temple structure was erected around 1761 CE. The temple comprises multiple smaller shrines along with the main Oriya β€˜Rekha Deul’ style temple dedicated to Mahadev. During Shivratri, Bakreshwar becomes a spiritual magnet for numerous Shiva devotees.
