Nandi is the sacred bull, the divine vehicle (Vahana), and the foremost devotee of Lord Shiva. Nandi's worship is always traditionally done as the immediate precursor to Lord Shiva's puja, never as a completely isolated, standalone worship. As the ultimate gatekeeper of Mount Kailash (outside cultural knowledge), worshipping him is the essential first step before approaching Mahadeva, as he filters out worldly impurities and carries the devotee's deepest prayers directly to his master. Because his spiritual identity is entirely anchored to his master, Nandi Puja must never be performed as an isolated event. It is always performed to seek permission and invite unshakeable devotion immediately prior to worshipping Lord Shiva:
• Always as the immediate precursor to daily household Shiva worship
• Every Monday (Somvar), immediately before bathing the Shiva Linga
• On Pradosh Vrat evenings (the twilight period of the 13th lunar day)
• On the grand night of Maha Shivaratri or monthly Masa Shivaratri observances
• During the highly auspicious monsoon month of Shravan (July/August)
• Any moment a family is seeking physical stability and the grace of Mahadeva
Empowering the Householder: You do not need a priest to perform a highly potent daily worship! Sitting facing North (the unchangeable direction for Shiva and his attendants), the householder can easily perform this 5-step (Panchopachar) worship before beginning the main Shiva Puja:
Step 1 - Gandha (Sacred Paste): Lovingly apply the Vibhuti Bhasma, White Chandan, Ashtagandha, and Attar to Nandi while chanting: "Om Gandhang Namah".
Step 2 - Pushpa (Flowers & Adornments): Offer white flowers, Akshat Rice, and tie the Raksha Sutra around his neck while chanting: "Om Pushpang Baushat".
Step 3 - Dhupa (Incense): Burn the purifying Agarbatti, Dhuna, and Guggal over the Chhobra to clear the environment while chanting: "Om Dhupang Namah".
Step 4 - Deepa (Illumination): Light your lamps using the Cotton Wicks and Cow Ghee/Mustard Oil to illuminate the altar while chanting: "Om Deepang Namah".
Step 5 - Naivedya (Food Offering): Offer the Pure Honey and any home-cooked sweet foods as a gesture of deep gratitude while chanting: "Om Naivedyang Nivedayami".
Steps 1-5 (Welcome & Purification): The Pandit formally offers a Seat (Asan), Welcome (Swagat), water for washing feet (Padya), an offering (Arghya), and water for sipping (Achamaniya).
Steps 6-9 (Madhuparka, Bath & Adornment): The priest must offer the 6th-step sweet mixture (Madhuparka) using your Pure Honey. Nandi is bathed using the Ganga Jal and Rose Water (Snaniya), and adorned (Abharan) with the Raksha Sutra and Vibhuti.
Steps 10-15 (The Grand Offerings): He is offered fragrances like White Chandan (Gandha), flowers (Pushpa), fierce purifying incense (Dhupa), glowing ghee lamps (Deepa), and a grand food offering (Naivedya).
Step 16 (The Tambula Requirement): According to the strict rules of the Purohit Darpan, a 16-step royal worship is absolutely invalid without the final Tambula offering. (Note: Because this kit is optimized for the 5-step household worship, you must supply your own Betel Nut, Clove, and Cardamom for the priest to complete this 16th step!)
The ceremony beautifully concludes with Camphor Aarti, immediately after which the priest will transition into the main worship of Lord Shiva!
