Temple History

Located 18-22 km east of Bolpur Shantiniketan, Basuli Bishalakshi Temple is situated in the village of Nanoor, the birthplace of the revered 14th-century Bengali poet Dwija Chandidas. The current temple structure comprises 14-15 temples that represent Bengal’s unique Charchala and Aatchala temple tradition, along with terracotta carvings. While the original Basuli Devi temple was destroyed by invaders, it was reconstructed in the early 18th century by the local zamindar, Ramjeevan Roy. There is a huge archaeological mound adjacent to the temple complex, locally known as Chandidas Bhita or Chandidas Dhibi.
